Hallow-tide: Three days of Light

Hallowtide is the name given to three days in the Christian calendar: All Hallows’ Eve, All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. Together, they invite us to reflect on Christ’s victory over sin and death, celebrate the saints, and remember and pray for those we have loved but see no longer.

All Hallows’ Eve (known as Halloween) is the night before All Saints. Traditionally, Christians have marked this night by mocking the powers of darkness and death, which have lost their sting through Christ’s resurrection.

At Holy Trinity Church (74 Trinity Rd) on Saturday 31st October, we begin with a Children’s All Hallows’ Service at 4pm, with singing, crafts, a candlelit procession and toasted marshmallows. From 5.30pm, everyone is welcome to our ‘No Trick, Our Treat’ drop-in whether you’re out trick or treating or just passing by. We’ve hot chocolate for children and wine for adults.

All Saints’ Day is a joyful celebration of all God’s holy people, known and unknown, whose lives have reflected Christ’s light.

We celebrate All Saints at St Augustine’s on Sunday 1st November at 10am.

All Souls’ Day (2 November) is a time to remember and pray for the faithful departed, entrusting them to God’s mercy and care.

We will commemorate All Souls at St Augustine’s on Sunday 1st November at 6pm.

Together, these three days remind us that the Church on earth and the Church in heaven are one family, united in the love of Christ.
