To become a Christian is to turn to Jesus Christ, to trust him, and to follow him as Lord and friend.

Baptism is the sign of that new beginning. But baptism is not just a ceremony or a label, it points to the heart of the Christian faith: that in Jesus Christ, God has acted to save us. Jesus died on the cross to deal with our sin and rose again to bring us new life. Becoming a Christian means saying yes to this gift of forgiveness and new life, leaving behind what is wrong, and learning to live in the way of Jesus. If you were baptised as a child, this gift is still for you, but it needs to become personal by turning away from sin, putting your trust in Jesus, and choosing to follow him with your life.

Some people think being a Christian is just about “being good,” and that going to church is optional. But Christianity is about far more than trying harder or behaving better. It is about what God has already done for us in Jesus. And church is essential, because it is where we find family, hear God’s word, share in the sacraments, and grow alongside others who encourage us in faith.

For those already baptised, Confirmation is a way of making those promises your own, and receiving prayer for the strength of the Holy Spirit to live them out.

Becoming a Christian is not only about a moment but about a lifelong journey. Christians grow in faith through worship, prayer, reading the Bible, and sharing in the life of the Church, especially in the Eucharist.

If you are exploring Christianity, the next step is to chat with one of the priests or lay ministers at St Augustine’s. They can walk with you, answer questions, and help you explore further as you discover more of God’s love in Jesus Christ.

If you’d like to meet with a priest or lay minister for a conversation or to explore the claims of Christianity, please be in touch.
